The proposal utilises existing airport infrastructure, which minimises the need for additional construction works.

Wairoa Runway Extension Project
Research and peer review for a significant runway extension project. Coordinating with Local Council/Airport Owners, Aerodrome Users and Stakeholders, Air Ambulance, Defence Force, Aerodrome and Airspace Designers and other external consultants and suppliers.
Project Summary:
Recognising the importance of the airport as a lifeline for the town in disasters, and also in assisting routine medical requirements of the local hospital, it was identified that the airport was in need of some upgrades. In the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle it was decided to progress plans to extend the runway, taking it from 900m to 1200m and in the process upgrading lighting and core facilities like aprons, taxiways, drainage and fencing. The objective was to extend the capability of the airport to allow aero medical flights the widest range of conditions, while also allowing for C130 Hercules aircraft in Civil Defence emergencies.
